How to get around Kyoto

The ups and downs of Kyoto's street

Kyoto is situated in a basin. As you go north the ground rises and as you go south it falls.

However, the slope of the road is not so steep that you need to worry unduly about it.

If you use the gear shift on your KCTP bicycle your trip round Kyoto should be free from care.

Where am I now? ~North? South? East? West?~ No problem in Kyoto!

It's easy to get lost in an unfamiliar town. However, Kyoto is laid out in a simple grid like pattern, with it's streets loading mostly north-south, of easy-west. Because of this it is very easy to judge by the upward or downward slope of the road whether you are going north or south. Again in those areas without high buildings you can always see mountains in the north and in the easy.

So if you are advancing on an upward slope and can see mountains on your right, then the way before you is north and the east is on your right.
In this way you can easily tell the points of the compass and need have no fear of getting lost.

The fastest most comfortable route between North and South is the Kamo River footpath

For a comfortable ride the footpath along the Kamo River really is the best. This is a wonderful route not just for walkers but also for bicycles. There will be some locations where you may need to carry your bicycle down some stairs, but as there are no stop signs, you can really enjoy a bracing ride.
However, please pay attention to your speed so as not to bother pedestrians by going too fast.

From Kinkakuji to Arashiyama A historical route in the North-western part of the old capital

Maybe you have visited both Kinkakuji and then Ryoanji and then returned home without stopping by Ninnaji. What a wasted opportunity! On the road between Kinkakuji and Ryoanji leads on to Rengeji Temple, Ninnaji Temple, Hirosawa Pond and goes on so far as Arashiyama. This is the historical route called Kinukake Road.

Hirosawa PondHowever, you should be aware that this road is sometimes quite narrow and the traffic heavy so please be careful when you go along here.
